Eurotrip Day 7 - Mondsee and Munich
(Part 7 of a series.)
With an early wake up call and breakfast, we entered the first week of our Eurotrip. On this day, we will visit Mondsee (still within Austria), then afterwards we're headed to Munich, Germany.
Mondsee is made popular by the movie The Sound of Music, and the Basilica there is where the wedding scene was filmed.
Carnivale
So apparently, this day is the Carnivale Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras. It was so freakin' quite in Mondsee. There was one cafe open in the town center near the Basilica and our tour group crowded the place for bread and coffee.
At that time the townspeople were setting up their food trucks. Beer was everywhere. I think they're expecting a lot of people to go in the afternoon. (Spoiler alert: Munich was crowded and in party mode.)
Lake
Lake Mondsee was so pretty and peaceful. Can't say anymore. It's something that you really to have see for yourself.
Munich
We travelled a few hours to Munich (Munchen), in Germany. It was party mode everywhere. There were so many people and they are drinking and most are in costume, too. It's a celebration of carnivale. There's a performance in the city square, too.
It was kinda overwhelming. I reminded DK to be vigilant as there could be pickpockets even with all the police officers patrolling. There isn't any commotion or disturbances though. Surprisingly, too, there isn't any foul smell coming from any corner. Maybe it's still too early in the day for any disturbances.
DK and I looked for a place to eat and we found this hotdog store. They serve beer too. We were wary at first because we really couldn't understand the menu. The owner, a bald man in his fifties, actually approached us in his storefront. I asked him what he would recommend and if it is good. He answered with his German confidence, "Everything is good, of course. We made it, it's good, yeah?" So DK and I ordered two of their bestsellers and yeah, the owner's confidence is well-founded. I wanted to eat more but the beer I ordered didn't sit well and I was afraid of having an emergency number two.
Munich was an orderly chaos at the time of our visit. The energy is unmatched. It's like as long as you're in the city center, you don't have to be afraid of anything and can just enjoy yourself. It's a very different energy from the Halloween in Osaka but the level of enjoyment you can achieve is similar.
DK and I dropped by the Residenz to take some photos outside (it was closed) and headed back with the tour group.
Side story: I want to live in a house beside water--a lake, a beach, a river... It just gives me a peaceful feeling.
